What happened?

As anyone will know, the Fast & Furious franchise has been churning out movies for many, MANY years now, with some high points, some slightly bumpier moments, and numerous returns from the dead for characters.

After 2023's tenth entry FAST X, a seemingly guaranteed Part 2 was to be released and conclude the story/cliffhanger that fans were left with, along with another spin-off movie for Dwayne Johnson's character Luke Hobbs, this time facing off against reigning villain Dante Reyes, played by Jason Momoa; however, the franchise seemed to come to an unexpected halt eventually.

With budgets reportedly a major sticking point for Universal, especially given the underperformance of FAST X, which cost around $453.6 million to make but only turned over around $714.4 million, the next instalment was looking less of a certainty.

That was until January 30th...

Vin Diesel's Announcement

Diesel has long been a producer and promoter of the FAST franchise's continuation, and understandably stands as the face of the movies. Through the heartbreak of Paul Walker's death in 2015, to his feud with Dwayne Johnson, he has remained a steadfast lover of the franchise.

On Jan 30th, it seemed a final confirmation of the sequel's future was secure after a post on Diesel's Instagram - on March 28th 2028, the next movie named FAST FOREVER will be released. Accompanied by a picture from the very first movie, showing the iconic scene of Brian O'Connor handing Dominic Torreto the keys to his "10-second car", perhaps a hint at another posthumous appearance from Walker (more below)...

This comes after another post from 27th Jan, where he simply stated "It's been a long road...", a hint at both the time it's taken to get the next movie into production.

So now that things seem to be on sturdier ground, what could FAST FOREVER have in store?

An L.A. Backdrop

This is not Diesel's first tease for the sequel, as he had previously announced news at an event called FUEL FEST in June 2025, where he was joined by fellow FAST stars Tyrese Gibson and Cody Walker, he said:

"The studio said to me, ‘Vin, can we please have the finale of ‘Fast and Furious’ [in] April 2027?'" I said, ‘Under three conditions.’ First, is to bring the franchise back to L.A.!"

Los Angeles has always been the home of the central characters, but as the scales and stunts ramped up over the years, the team have been taken to Dubai, London, Brazil, and many other locations. Now, it seems the L.A. may become a more focal point.

Back to Street Racing

Diesel continued:

"The second thing was to return to the car culture, to the street racing!"

For the first few movies, street racing was an integral factor and a source of many action scenes. From the fourth movie onwards, the focus went more towards larger set pieces involving cars, which arguably is what led to some of the better movies in the franchise, such as Fast 5, Fast & Furious 6, and Furious 7.

Street races have featured in small capacities in each film, so whether this means it'll become a much larger part of the next movie is yet to be seen, but following on from the epic events of FAST X, making street racing the focus again feels like an unwise choice from a storytelling and scale perspective.

Brian O'Connor Returns

Last but not least, in what was likely a deliberate choice, Diesel concluded:

"The third thing was reuniting Dom and Brian O’Conner."

Cody Walker stood as a body double for his brother Paul in Furious 7, after his unexpected death resulted in digital renders of Paul's face for certain unfinished scenes, leading to an emotional yet dignified send-off for a beloved character.

While references have been made in subsequent movies since Walker's passing, this statement from Diesel heavily implies that the character will return via the same route for the allegedly final movie in the franchise.

Final Thoughts

There are still other questions to be answered in FAST FOREVER from the previous entry, such as;

  • How do Dom and his son Brian escape from the exploding dam (and will we see a time jump considering the 5-year gap between the movies)?

  • Will The Rock return to his role as Hobbs following his post-credits cameo?

  • How did Giselle (played by Gal Gadot) survive falling from a PLANE?

  • Will John Cena's character Jakob, also make a miraculous recovery from his supposed death?

  • Is Dante going to get his revenge or become a part of the family?

The answers to these are sure to come eventually, but whether another delay will come is also yet to be seen. Will you be racing to see the next movie when it releases?
