What happened?

With a fresh set of Oscar nominations, there is always disappointment, elation, and shocks for audiences and industry players; this year has brought a range of newbie actors to the table, some returning faces, and a big record-breaker for the industry.

New Nominees

  • Rose Byrne

  • Renate Reinsve

  • Elle Fanning

  • Stellan Skarsgård

Returning Nominees

  • Leonardo DiCaprio (7-time nominee, 1-time winner)

  • Sean Penn (6-time nominee, 2-time winner)

  • Ethan Hawke (5-time nominee)

  • Emma Stone (5-time nominee)

  • Timothy Chalamet (3-time nominee)

  • Benicio del Toro (3-time nominee)

  • Jessie Buckley (2-time nominee)

  • Amy Madigan (2-time nominee)

There were some notable absences from the nominations, including Paul Mescal for his portrayal of William Shakespeare in Hamnet, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for their dual acting and singing roles in Wicked: For Good, which will likely disappoint many fans, and Dwayne Johnson for his role in The Smashing Machine, who received high praise from Director Christopher Nolan who said "I think it’s an incredible performance... I don’t think you’ll see a better performance this year or most other years". 1

The most notable highlight from the nominations comes for Ryan Coogler, a new record breaker. His movie Sinners focused on criminal twin brothers (both portrayed by Michael B Jordan) dealing with vampires in the Mississipi Delta during the 1930s, and has gained a momentus 16 nominations, the most a movie has EVER gained, beating the previous record holders All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016) who all held 14 nominations in their respective years.

The deciding votes will come from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), but WHO do you want to see win? Who deserves that Golden, shiny statue? Cast your votes below...
