What happened?

The Oklahoma City Thunder storm into the new season as the defending 2025 NBA champions, powered by Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander. The landscape has shifted significantly in a year. The West is stacked, the East is hungry, and the challengers are coming. Now the question is simple: can anyone disrupt last year's finalists to the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy?

Detroit Pistons – The Underdog

Few stories in recent NBA history rival the Detroit Pistons’ ascent. After sitting at the bottom of the league just two seasons ago, Detroit stunned the basketball world by winning 60 games in 2025–26—only the third time in franchise history they’ve hit that mark.

This wasn’t a fluke. It was a coronation.

The franchise cornerstone whose steady evolution has mirrored Detroit’s rise. His leadership and playmaking have become the Pistons’ heartbeat.

Supporting Team — While the article doesn’t list specific names, the Pistons’ leap suggests a roster that has matured into a cohesive, defensively stout, offensively balanced team.

Boston Celtics — Former Champions

Despite losing Jayson Tatum to a torn Achilles the previous season, Boston still managed a 56‑26 record in 2025–26, thanks to a career‑defining season from Jaylen Brown and a masterful coaching job by Joe Mazzulla. With Tatum returning late in the season and rounding into form, the Celtics re‑entered the playoffs as conference favourites.

Jaylen Brown, fresh off a season that redefined his ceiling, will no doubt bring worthy accolades deep into the playoffs.

New‑Look Supporting Team — Boston reshuffled the roster after Tatum’s injury, trading Kristaps Porziņģis and Jrue Holiday and losing Al Horford in free agency.

New York Knicks — Emerging Contender

The Knicks reached their first Conference Finals in 25 years during the 2024–25 postseason, winning 51 games and emerging as a legitimate threat in the East. Now they're back in the playoffs as the third seed and are set to disrupt the East to reach the finals.

Supporting Team — The Knicks’ depth and defensive identity have become their calling card.

Cleveland Cavaliers — Quiet Juggernaut

Cleveland’s 64‑win season in 2024–25 was no accident, and in the 25-26 regular season, they could boast in both their offence and defence. The return of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. They aim to bring this same energy to the playoffs.

Oklahoma City Thunder — The Returning Champions

The Thunder have become the NBA’s most terrifying machine. They posted a 64‑18 record following their stellar season last year, totalling 68-14.

Over the past two seasons, they’ve gone an astonishing 132‑32 and are looking to regain both the finals and finals MVP trophies.

Top to Watch – Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams

Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander — The reigning MVP (2025 & 2026) and one of the calmest superstars in the league.

Denver Nuggets — The Reclaiming Threat

Denver pushed the Thunder to a Game 7 in the 2025 Western Semifinals and responded by adding veteran depth behind Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray. The 2025–26 playoffs will mark 3 years since their championship run, and Jokić will take all teams to 7 games if it comes down to it.

San Antonio Spurs — The Wembanyama Era

The Spurs finished 62‑20 in 2025–26, powered by Victor Wembanyama’s rise and a transformational offseason. A team still inexperienced in deep playoff runs since the end of Popovich's coaching legacy. Wemby and new coach, Mitch Johnson, are looking to leave their mark, or, in the best-case scenario, win it all.

Supporting Team — The Spurs have surrounded him with length, shooting, and defensive versatility.

Who has the Edge?

Thunder remain the defending champions, but the field is deeper than ever. The Celtics and Thunder are looking like the league’s dynastic finals duo. The Nuggets want to experience another but have to recover from the Timberwolves, and the Pistons are trying to channel the franchise's historic 2004 championship run. The playoffs are underway, with the higher-seeded teams performing as expected, except for the Pistons and the Denver Nuggets. We'll have to see who makes it to June's NBA finals.

For Cloutskout, the finals could go any direction, but the top conderders would be the favourites in the Thunder and Spurs with Wemby who's only been in the league 3 years and won DPOY and top 3 in the MVP award. On the East side, the only proven champs are the Boston Celtics with Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brown at the helm, but the other contender being the Cleveland Cavaliers. We predict that it will be Celtics vs Thunder, where it will be a battle of the brawn, but if Shai's got anything to say, it may be his time for a two-peat.
