Why is Roger Federer so beloved as a tennis player? Not only by people across the globe, but also by myself, ever since I was a youngster watching tennis.
Roger Federer’s appeal goes beyond mere statistics—his legacy is built on artistry, grace, and an almost mythical presence in tennis. Federer displayed a grace and elegance on the tennis court that we’d not seen before he arrived on the scene or since his retirement in 2022. Federer’s playing style is often described as poetry in motion. His fluid movement, impeccable shot-making, and graceful technique made him mesmerising to watch.
Furthermore, his approach to the game of tennis was captivating for fans and also widely admired. Federer became widely respected for his graciousness in both victory and defeat. He never engaged in on-court drama and always treated opponents with respect, a quality often seen lacking in the current generation of players.

Federer also didn’t engage in as much baseline-dominated play as the current crop of top players does. The fluidity and variation of Federer’s game made him such a joy to watch, even though the modern tennis players of today can still blow fans away with their athleticism, power and speed.
Federer’s greatness isn’t just about numbers and wins—it’s about the way he made people feel when they watched him play. His legacy is one of beauty, class, and an enduring love for the sport.
Since Federer retired, I’ve yet to find a replacement player who can be my true favourite. There are players I enjoy watching, sure, but it was Federer that inspired me to pick up a tennis racket. Thus, I’ve felt fairly downbeat about the possibility of a new player ever being able to arrive on the tennis scene and inspire the same feelings in fans that Roger Federer did. I’m not referring to winning, but more to aura and play style. The top players of today can dominate, but they don’t quite glide. And while some, like Alcaraz, have charisma and flair, the universal reverence Federer commanded feels almost mythical in hindsight.
That said, tennis is always evolving. Maybe one day, a new player will emerge who blends grace, humility, and artistry in a way that echoes Federer’s magic. But to match his aura?
That’s a tall order. Federer didn’t just play tennis—he elevated it.
